5:50 A.M. was made in a Polish forest at the precise moment the title names — before full light, when colour has not yet committed to itself and the air holds the residue of night. A dirt road leads into fog and disappears; the trees on either side are present but indistinct, their forms softened by moisture and the particular quality of pre-dawn grey. This is El Bosque before the forest becomes legible — caught in the interval between darkness and a day that has not yet arrived.
